Getting this balance right depends on clearly defined access rules and door components suited to the job, since the greatest risks at nursery entrances arise during ordinary day-to-day operation rather than exceptional events.

A child may slip outside unnoticed amid the general bustle, someone may hold the door open for a person who shouldn’t be there, or escape-route arrangements may simply not be clearly defined. A well-planned door security system lets staff monitor entrances and exits without disrupting everyday operations, and clear procedures with compliant safety functions reduce the scope for human error while giving parents confidence about who can enter, when and how. Modern digital solutions can meet these requirements systematically, from time-controlled access and secure locking to suitable finger-trap protection for doors used by young children.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://blog.simons-voss.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/kindergarten-tueren-sichern-3.jpg” alt=”Kleines Mädchen geht auf Kindergartentür zu” title_text=”Kleines Mädchen geht auf Kindergartentür zu” align=”center” admin_label=”Bild” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” min_height=”80px” border_color_all=”#d0040d” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text ul_type=”square” admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Typical Requirements for Nursery Entrance Doors

Nursery entrance doors need to do more than simply open and close. They form part of the overall safeguarding and security strategy while also serving as a key point of contact for parents, staff and service providers, so requirements need to be defined around real day-to-day processes rather than assumed.

► Controlled External Access at Defined Times Only

The door shouldn’t be freely accessible from outside, but drop-off and collection periods need to work without a member of staff having to monitor the door continuously. Access can be controlled through defined time periods or individual permissions, so that outside these periods only authorised people can open the door, and the door locks automatically again after every opening.

In short: the door stays locked by default and opens only for authorised people or during defined time windows, relocking automatically each time.

► Reliable Everyday Security with an Emergency-Escape Function

Children mustn’t be able to open the door independently and leave unsupervised, whether out of curiosity or amid the bustle of the day, while the security measures in place must never obstruct evacuation in an emergency. The solution needs to allow the door to be opened safely from inside, and it should be designed so that adults can operate it intuitively without specialist knowledge.

In short: everyday security has to prevent children opening the door alone, without ever compromising a member of staff’s ability to open it instantly in an emergency.

► UK Safeguarding, Workplace and Fire-Safety Requirements

Entrance-door security must support children’s safeguarding without compromising safe evacuation, and the relevant requirements depend on whether the nursery is located in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, so a site-specific assessment is essential before specifying anything.

The Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework sets the safeguarding and welfare requirements that early years providers in England must meet, including keeping children safe, supervising them appropriately and ensuring premises are suitable for their purpose. Entrance-door arrangements should therefore prevent children leaving unnoticed and restrict unauthorised access, while remaining workable for staff during normal operation and emergencies. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland each have their own early years regulatory and inspection frameworks, which need to be considered separately for facilities in those nations.

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 apply to most workplaces in Great Britain, and Regulation 18 requires doors and gates to be suitably constructed and fitted with any necessary safety devices. Powered doors must include effective measures to prevent trapping injuries and, where necessary, must be capable of manual operation unless they open automatically following a power failure. For a nursery entrance, this means considering the complete doorset, including the door leaf, ironmongery, closing mechanism, controls and finger-trap protection, rather than any single component in isolation.

Fire-safety legislation also applies and varies by nation. In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires the responsible person to assess and manage fire risks, and emergency doors must not be locked or fastened in a way that prevents them being opened easily and immediately by anyone who may need to use them in an emergency. In Scotland, the equivalent duties arise principally under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006, and in Northern Ireland the relevant framework includes the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010.

Building regulations add a further layer. In England, Approved Document B provides guidance on meeting the fire-safety requirements of the Building Regulations, and escape-door fastenings should be easy to understand and operate from the direction of escape, without a key and without requiring more than one mechanism. Electrically powered locks on escape routes should release when the fire-detection and alarm system operates, when power is lost, when a system fault occurs, and when the security override is activated, and equivalent building standards apply in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The appropriate exit hardware depends on the building’s use and occupancy: BS EN 179 covers emergency-exit devices for users who are familiar with the building and its escape arrangements, while BS EN 1125 covers panic-exit devices operated by a horizontal bar where panic may occur or users may be unfamiliar with the exit. The correct specification should be determined through the fire-risk assessment and by a competent fire-safety or door-hardware professional.

In short: a nursery entrance door sits under safeguarding, workplace safety, fire-safety and building regulations at once, all of which vary by UK nation, so it should be treated as a single risk-assessed system rather than a set of separate components.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://blog.simons-voss.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/kindergarten-tueren-sichern-4.jpg” alt=”Mutter zieht Kind im Kindergarten Schuhe an” title_text=”Mutter zieht Kind im Kindergarten Schuhe an” align=”center” admin_label=”Bild” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” min_height=”80px” border_color_all=”#d0040d” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Technical Solutions and Equipment: How Can Entrance Doors Be Secured?

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Basic solution: escape-door terminal, electric escape-door locking system and external release.

One workable configuration combines an electrically powered escape-door locking system with an escape-door terminal on the inside and a suitable external release device. During normal operation, this can keep the door secure against unauthorised entry or unsupervised exit, but in an emergency the system must release safely in line with the applicable fire strategy, risk assessment and building requirements. Any electrically powered lock on an escape route needs to form part of a properly designed and tested doorset, with its release behaviour in response to the fire alarm, loss of power, system faults and manual emergency operation established during planning and commissioning.

In short: the basic setup pairs an electric locking system with an internal terminal and external release, but its emergency-release behaviour must be tested and documented as part of the doorset, not assumed.

Additional options: access control, multipoint locking and alarms.

Depending on the site, such as where the entrance opens directly onto a road, and how the nursery is organised, it may be worth going beyond a basic push-button arrangement. An access control system replaces conventional keys and removes common vulnerabilities such as keys being lost or copied and uncertainty over who holds them, while alarm functions can flag unintended emergency releases, doors being held open or attempted tampering. Where a higher level of security is needed, the door can be reinforced mechanically using suitable lock variants or a multipoint locking system, though any additional locking must remain compatible with the building’s fire strategy and means-of-escape requirements.

In short: access control removes key-management risk and alarms flag tampering, but any extra locking added for security must still work within the fire strategy, not against it.

Ergonomics and everyday practicality: finger-trap protection and ease of use.

Controls intended for adults should be clearly positioned and easy to reach, door status should be immediately recognisable, and the door must return reliably to its secured state after every authorised use. Accident-prevention measures matter just as much, particularly suitable finger-trap protection at the hinge side and closing edge of doors used by young children, and door closers should be configured so doors close reliably without creating avoidable impact, trapping or shearing hazards. Accessibility also needs considering, with controls, opening forces and clear opening widths assessed against the applicable guidance, including Approved Document M in England or the corresponding accessibility standards elsewhere in the UK.

In short: day-to-day usability, finger-trap protection and accessibility all need designing in from the start, not treated as an afterthought once the locking system is chosen.

Optional door monitoring for additional control.

A door monitoring and alarm unit gives a useful extra safeguard where unintended door opening would present a particularly serious risk. It can use audible or visual signals to show that a door has been opened unexpectedly, held open too long, or placed into emergency release, letting staff respond promptly without relying on someone noticing manually.

In short: door monitoring adds a layer of alerting on top of the lock itself, useful where an unnoticed opening would be a serious safeguarding risk.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”Zeile” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ admin_label=”Spalte” _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https://blog.simons-voss.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/kindergarten-tueren-sichern-2.jpg” alt=”Mutter zieht Kind im Kindergarten Schuhe an” title_text=”Little,Boy,And,Girl,With,A,Tie-dye,Color,Backpack,Looking” align=”center” admin_label=”Bild” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” min_height=”80px” border_color_all=”#d0040d” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text ul_type=”square” admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.7em” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Security Risks and How to Prevent Them

The most common problems at nursery entrance doors happen during normal day-to-day operation rather than exceptional events: many people using the entrance at once, a brief lapse in attention, or a door left open because that’s simply more convenient than securing it properly each time. It’s worth addressing the typical risks explicitly rather than assuming good behaviour will hold.

► Children getting out and strangers getting in

During normal operation, the door stays secured and is released from outside only under defined conditions, such as specified time periods or for authorised users. Child-safe internal operating arrangements support this without unnecessarily delaying adults, while preventing children from opening the door spontaneously, and an audible alert at particularly sensitive locations can ensure an opening doesn’t go unnoticed. Child-safeguarding measures must never prevent immediate escape in an emergency, and the operating arrangement should be agreed as part of the fire-risk assessment and safeguarding strategy together, not separately.

► Lost keys and unauthorised access

Controlling who holds keys isn’t always straightforward, particularly when staff change, temporary workers are brought in, or external service providers need access. An access control system removes this vulnerability through clearly managed permissions using transponders, cards, fobs or comparable credentials, since credentials can be blocked if lost and permissions amended without replacing mechanical cylinders or altering the locking hardware. This also makes it possible to give agency staff, contractors and other service providers temporary access without issuing permanent keys.

► Blocked escape routes and unsafe door arrangements

Another common problem is makeshift arrangements that compromise escape routes, such as doors wedged open, left permanently unlocked, or altered in ways that stop them operating as intended in an emergency. A suitable fire-risk assessment, a compliant doorset and clearly defined management procedures can prevent this, and appropriate emergency- or panic-exit hardware helps doors open reliably and intuitively when required. Any access control equipment fitted to an escape door must be designed so that security can never override life safety.

In short: the biggest risks at a nursery entrance are everyday human ones, not technical failures, and access control mainly helps by removing key-management uncertainty while keeping escape routes genuinely usable at all times.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text ol_position=”outside” ol_item_indent=”20px” admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” ul_font_size=”20px” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Planning and Implementation: What Operators and Specifiers Should Consider

An effective entrance strategy has to be based on conditions at the individual site. A child leaving unsupervised presents a significantly greater risk where the entrance opens directly onto a public road than where it leads into an enclosed courtyard, and the layout of pedestrian routes, visibility, circulation areas and where staff are normally stationed all affect the design too. Components can then be selected on this basis, matched to the nursery’s structure, number of users, daily routines and defined roles, with typical hazards identified and systematically reduced at the planning stage rather than fixed retrospectively.

The planning process should involve the nursery operator, safeguarding lead, facilities team, fire-risk assessor and a competent door or access control specialist, and where necessary the building control body, fire and rescue service or relevant enforcing authority should also be consulted.

In short: entrance-door planning starts from the specific site’s risks, such as proximity to a road, and should involve the safeguarding lead and fire-risk assessor alongside whoever specifies the door hardware.

Emergency Procedures

Even the best technology can’t replace a clearly defined emergency procedure. Who is authorised to release the doors during an emergency? What signals or alarms are provided? What happens if the power supply or access control system fails? How will the functions be tested regularly, and how will staff be trained to operate the system safely under pressure? A clear emergency procedure prevents improvisation and improves safety when it matters most, and escape-door functions, emergency releases, alarm interfaces and powered locks should all sit within planned inspection, testing and maintenance arrangements, with records kept in line with the facility’s fire-safety and maintenance procedures.

In short: technology alone isn’t an emergency procedure; nurseries also need a documented, tested and trained-for plan for who releases the doors and what happens if the system fails.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://blog.simons-voss.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/notfallplan.jpg” alt=”Notfallplan im Kindergarten” title_text=”Notfallplan im Kindergarten” align=”center” admin_label=”Bild” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”80%” min_height=”80px” border_color_all=”#d0040d” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text ul_type=”square” ol_position=”outside” ol_item_indent=”20px” admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”|300|||||||” text_text_color=”#6b717a” text_font_size=”22px” ul_font_size=”20px” ul_line_height=”1.6em” ol_font_size=”20px” ol_line_height=”1.6em” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”]

Why Digital Locking Systems Are a Compelling Choice for Nurseries

Digital locking systems can reflect daily routines and access permissions accurately, reduce organisational risk and expand in stages as a nursery grows. Many nurseries start with the main entrance, since that’s where the need for security is greatest, and digital systems can later extend to secondary entrances, staff entrances and internal areas without changing the system’s underlying logic.

Electronic access control also reduces the burden on staff, since doors don’t need opening manually throughout the day, while access remains secure. A clearly planned combination of locking, emergency-release functionality and operating procedures prevents unsafe temporary arrangements becoming permanent, and digital systems can support a documented security strategy built around the fire-risk assessment, safeguarding requirements and the needs of the individual building.

Permissions can be updated quickly and centrally, including for cover staff, trainees and external service providers, so temporary access rights maintain security without adding operational complexity. Secure, copy-protected transponders, access logging and the ability to block lost credentials quickly all reduce risk, since permissions can be revoked and reassigned instead of cutting replacement keys or changing locks. Less key administration also means less work and fewer potential sources of error, and the longer a system stays in use, the more these benefits compound as processes become standardised and auditable.

SimonsVoss AX is a logical building block for this approach: the system supports flexible management of access permissions at entrance doors and can be extended to additional doors throughout the premises as required, making it well suited to typical nursery environments and to the wider digital locking systems approach more generally.

In short: digital locking scales from a single entrance to a whole site, cuts key administration, and lets permissions be revoked and reassigned instantly instead of replacing hardware.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Sektion” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_row admin_label=”Zeile” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”#f5f5f5″ global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ admin_label=”Spalte” _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text ul_type=”square” _builder_version=”4.27.5″ _module_preset=”default” ul_line_height=”1.6em” custom_margin=”30px|30px|30px|30px|false|false” custom_margin_tablet=”30px|30px|30px|30px|false|false” custom_margin_phone=”30px|30px|30px|30px|false|false” custom_margin_last_edited=”on|desktop” hover_enabled=”0″ header_2_font_tablet=”” header_2_font_phone=”” header_2_font_last_edited=”on|phone” inline_fonts=”Verdana” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Practical Example: KiTa Geldersheim, Germany

KiTa Geldersheim, an existing SimonsVoss customer operated by the Municipality of Geldersheim, was built in 2020 and extended in 2021, and now has around 40 doors. Its outdoor grounds sit next to a busy road, so the aim was an access strategy that would protect children reliably, reduce the burden on staff and give parents clear, transparent rules. A System 3060 active system was already in use, and the main entrance and a two-door interlock were implemented as hybrid solutions, allowing additional access using SmartTags.

Access to the grounds through a two-door interlock

Access is provided through two consecutive doors using interlock logic, so door one must close before door two can open. This was implemented using a SmartRelay 3 with two readers, connected to electric door releases and magnetic door contacts. Where a two-door interlock forms part of an escape route, its emergency behaviour must be defined within the fire strategy, and the arrangement must never prevent immediate and safe evacuation.

Access to the building during defined drop-off and collection periods

Access to the building is restricted to defined time periods, using a SmartRelay 3 with a reader, passive RFID credentials for parents and a motorised lock.
