Heinz-Glas practical report: Improved access control through networked locking systems

by | 2. January 2024 | Best Practices

The Heinz-Glas Group is located in the heart of Upper Franconia, at the interface between tradition and innovation. Originating from traditional glass manufacturing, the company has developed into a global producer of packaging solutions. It combines centuries of craftsmanship with modern production techniques to offer innovative packaging. With over 400 years of history, Heinz-Glas stands for the highest quality and progressive thinking.

Equipping the company headquarters in Kleintettau with modern SimonsVoss locking systems is a prime example of successful innovation. This practical case shows once again how new generations of locks not only replace old ones, but surpass them in many respects.

Need for more locking convenience at Heinz-Glas

As a leading manufacturer for the perfume and cosmetics industry, Heinz-Glas attaches great importance to safety and efficiency. Replacing the outdated access control system was therefore a logical step. The aim was to find a solution that would also meet the company’s requirements in the long term.

Hendrik Heinz, Global Digitalization & Automation Manager at Heinz-Glas, explains the reasons as follows:

The previous system was not networked. Whenever an access authorization was changed – and this happens really frequently in our company – a person first had to program this change at their workstation and later at the lock. We lost a lot of time because our site is very extensive… Now access is clearly regulated.

This assessment stands for more than just the use of new technology. It is an example of the progress of digital locking systems and the ongoing change in the security industry. Innovation and new needs are mutually dependent in a constant cycle.

The new generation: networked, reliable, flexible

The choice fell on products from SimonsVoss. After careful planning and execution, the new system was completed in 2023. The result is a fully networked, digital access solution. It makes the Kleintettau site safer and more efficient by taking into account the specific needs of Heinz-Glas.

    • Flexibility: Electronic doors offer adaptable access control.
    • Modularity: The system grows with the company’s requirements.
    • Integration: The connection to personnel time recording simplifies internal processes.

Success story: The implementation at Heinz-Glas

The successful implementation of the digital locking system was a joint project with our specialist retail partner M.N.O. Stühler GmbH & Co. KG from Nuremberg. The careful selection of components and the customized installation resulted in a system that has proven itself in practice.

The advanced, digital locking system consists of around 400 cylinders. After a successful test phase with TN4 cylinders the change to the more powerful AX cylinders which resulted in longer battery life and improved efficiency. The finished system comprises SmartHandles 3062 for user-friendly control, SmartRelays types 2 and 3 and SmartOutput-modules for networked control of the system. Integration into the personnel time recording system and the use of active transponders with RFID inlays also make day-to-day work easier and increase efficiency.

Key advantages of the new locking system

    • Security: Critical areas are now more effectively protected, supported by advanced encryption technology.
    • No loss of keys: Digital transponders replace physical keys, reducing the risk of loss.
    • Transparency: Every access is documented and can be traced centrally.
    • Efficiency: Changes are made in real time, without manual programming.
    • Convenience: Employees benefit from easier handling and carry fewer keys.
    • Resource efficiency: The elimination of physical keys promotes sustainability and cost-effectiveness through durable components.

With SimonsVoss, Heinz-Glas has not only received a new access control system, but has also gained a partner for digital transformation. The switch to this innovative technology illustrates the potential that lies in the digitalization of security systems. It can serve as inspiration for other companies that have not yet dared to take the step towards digitalization.

Safety culture in transition: many things are becoming easier

The introduction of a new digital locking system at Heinz-Glas shows that new technological solutions have a number of positive effects. They are leading to a change in the security culture of companies by meeting more complex security requirements with more user-friendly and efficient systems. This not only changes the safety processes, but also how they are perceived and applied by employees.
